Artemeter releases study showing fanpowered environmental action is a viable, scalable funding model for sportssustainability; FC Barcelona leads the way
Artemeter, a carbon investment manager and advisory firm pioneering financial innovation for sustainability in sport, has released new research showing that global sports fans want their teams to lead on climate action and they’re ready to be part of the solution.
The research, conducted across the United States and Europe, affirms Artemeter’s core thesis, fan powered environmental performance is an actionable, scalable, and financially viable model, enabling teams to afford sustainability initiatives.
Over half (57%) of survey participants say they share personal responsibility for reducing their own footprint when attending games. Additionally, fans not only expect clubs to take responsibility for their environmental impact, but also feel personal pride when teams invest in verified environmental programs and visible sustainability efforts. This is reflected in findings that 63% of fans believe teams should take greater responsibility for their environmental impact, 63% feel proud when their club invests in sustainability programs and 90% want to see how those efforts make a difference.
“Fans want their teams to lead, and they’re ready to be part of the action, too,” said Olivia Albrecht, CEO and Founder of Artemeter. “Environmental responsibility is becoming part of the identity of sport and this research proves that environmental performance is not only a responsibility, but a shared opportunity. When teams and fans work together, environmental stewardship becomes both affordable and impactful.”
As one of the world’s most influential cultural ecosystems, sport has a powerful platform to drive environmental progress. While many teams have made progress through efficiency and renewable energy programs, most face barriers to supporting verified environmental projects at scale.
To bridge that gap, Artemeter has developed a fan powered environmental performance model. A framework that enables teams to integrate small, transparent environmental contributions into everyday fan experiences such as ticketing and merchandise. The approach gives teams a practical, credible way to accelerate measurable climate impact while strengthening trust and engagement with supporters and sponsors.
“Sport has an unparalleled ability to mobilize people,” said Albrecht. “Fans want to be part of the solution, and our model enables teams to connect that passion with credible, verified environmental action.”
Artemeter’s model is already being implemented with FC Barcelona, which has committed to integrating small environmental contributions into its Espai Barça Sustainability program, supporting verified carbon and local projects. This collaboration underscores a broader industry shift, leading clubs are moving from high-level climate commitments to actionable, budget supported pathways, enabled by new models that align financial innovation with fan sentiment.
The research follows Artemeter’s recent partnership announcement with Abatable, aimed at accelerating decarbonization across global sports and entertainment through high-integrity climate programs.
