About the paintings

My style could be called Natural Expressionism. Influenced by writers on Ecology, I embrace a theory of the natural world that says we are natural and there is a universe within that is no different than the outside natural world. Painting is my way of exploring that world. My images are postcards from my travels. Emotive works mixing acrylic and oil paints bubble with the exuberance of a natural spring. With my science background at heart, I love to experiment with fresh ways of creating. I find that painting without adhering to theory or being circumscribed by tradition leads to a deep understanding of how Nature works. My whole focus is to break out of that thinking space and go to where the hands lead. I don’t use brushes, instead I move paint with my hands or by laying one canvas on top of the other to create an image-rich tension. I also lift vibrant organic patterns off of a pool of water.

From as early as I can remember I have been enchanted by the beauty and complexity of natural pattern. When I paint I create a fluid environment in which the forces of opposition and attraction, tension and release can work their magic. As in time-lapse photography, organic images and patterns spontaneously blossom and dance on the canvas.

Sometimes I close my eyes and paint intuitively in order to better feel what is emerging. Often I move between two or three images allowing each to help in the creation of the others by sharing surfaces, pouring residues and spinning canvases like dancing bodies.

Recently I have begun to paint with ink directly on water thus witnessing the way liquids carve, disperse, pulse, swirl and surge. These active images are much like postcards from an enchanting journey far above the earth or from burrowing below the surface veneer of the everyday.

I don’t look at my paintings with any kind of critical eye — I just kind of let them do their thing, My paintings offer a non-linear entry into a deep relationship with Nature.
